Jonathan Tani

MASTER JONATHAN TANI

Qi-Gong Master

Hawaii's Karate Grand Champion

Jonathan Tani is a third generation Japanese-American, born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii, the youngest of four children.  In 1957, at the age of 10, he began training in Judo and at 15, began Karate training. As an international tournament veteran during the 1960s and 1970s, he was twice the karate grand champion of Hawaii. From 1978-79 he was appointed Chief Instructor of the Japan Karate Association's Hawaii Region.

Many Buddhist teachers, fellow martial artists, and friends profoundly influenced Tani’s evolution. Raised as a Pure Land Buddhist, he is still active at the Jodo Shinshu Higashi Hongwanji. His study of T'ai Chi Ch'uan began in 1969, shortly after moving to Honolulu. In the 1980s, he began training in Shorinji Kenpo (also known as Shaolin) which includes martial arts and Kongo Zen meditation.

As a student, practitioner, and teacher of ch'i for thirty years, Tani has focused much of that time simplifying and de-mystifying its theories. He has developed simple and accessible methods that allow everyone to experience ch'i first and then effortlessly move it by memorizing postures. This naturally increases ch'i. Tani asserts that ch'i is a natural part of being human and searching for something one already has makes it elusive in the beginning. As Tani states, “ch'i is the jewel already in your pocket.”
